ACTION ALERT: SAVE HOME BIRTH IN NY - from Choices In Childbirth

We need your help!

At midnight tomorrow, April 30th, the majority of New York City's home birth midwives will no longer be able to practice legally. Unless immediate action is taken by the Governor and the NYS Department of Health the women that these midwives serve will be denied access to a home birth with their chosen provider and these providers will no longer be able to practice legally in NYS.

YOU MUST ACT NOW to save the home birth option for New York Women:
Call:
311
Wendy Saunders, Executive Deputy Commissioner for the NY State Department of Health, appointed by Governor Paterson. 518-474-8390
Larry Mokhiber, he Secretary of the Board of Midwifery (518-474-3817, extension 130)
And say....

With the closing of St. Vincent's Hospital, half of the licensed, highly trained home birth midwives serving NYC have lost their Written Practice Agreement (WPA). St Vincent's was the only Hospital in the city supportive of a woman's right to choose a home birth and willing to sign a WPA. In the weeks since it's announced closure, these midwives have reached out to hospitals and obstetricians all across the city looking for support, with no success. Please help us to save the homebirth option in New York.

People can also email the Governor at http://www.state.ny.us/governor/contact/GovernorContactForm.php.

We are in our final hours! Please forward this email and help us flood 311 and the Governor's office with calls supporting home birth.

And while you're at it, please sign our petition supporting the Midwifery Modernization Act which will remove the WPA from the midwifery law effectively removing this barrier to accessing midwifery care.

I'm Teaching a Weight Management Online Class

Options to Assist Weight Management Course
Instructor: Nicole A. Tucker

With a new decade upon us, many have declared losing weight as their main goal. A weight challenge since childhood or due to an illness can cause issues within ourselves that can affect our self-esteem, self-worth, and creative expression in life. It is reported that obesity is high in the United States, for both adults and children; and with this comes the increasing possibility of developing diabetes, heart disease, and various forms of other health issues.

In this informative course, we will explore our relationships with food, and how this contributes to the weight issue. In addition, we will examine the various natural therapy resources to safely and gently assist a balanced approach to one's health. Areas such as: types of food intake, portion control, water intake, exercise, and emotional eating will be addressed. Valuable information will be presented on how modalities such as Enzyme Therapy, Herbal Care, Aromatherapy and Homeopathy, can effectively assist us in our journey of weight management.

Everyday is Earth Day!

April 22nd is revered as Earth Day, though it is important to care for the planet everyday. As we move forward in acknowledging the value of caring for the Earth, I encourage you to view the planet as a living, breathing energy that we co-exist, co-create and co-manisfest with.

Furthermore, I empower you to see and utilize Earth's garden as the solution and remedy to all that ails us. Natural healthcare solutions as Herbal Medicine, Essential Oils (Aromatherapy), Homeopathy, Enzyme Therapy, Flower Essences, all derive from nature. I am sure most of you use these remedies in some form or another and may not realize the extent of the benefits. For you Rosemary chicken lovers, herb of Rosemary has hepatic properties, which makes it an excellent tonic for the liver, which is responsible for detoxifying the body and emotions, hormonal health, digestive support and a great deal more.

My maternal grandmother saves the orange skin after peeling, allows it to dry and makes tea with it. It is unclear to me if she knows the vast benefits, but, by making tea with the orange skin, the essential oils inside would submerge in the tea, making it, not only tasty, but, therapeutic. Essential Oil from Orange is a digestive aid, promotes sunny, cheery moods, and much more. Essential Oils, in general, are a staple in most major food and beverage industries, see list below:

Bergamot - Earl Grey Tea
Sweet Birch - Root Beer
Cinnamon and Wintergreen - Coca Cola
Clove - Toothpaste
Cardamom - Spice for cooking (curry)
Black Pepper - Alcoholic drinks
Cajeput - Dental and pharmaceutical work

This Earth Day and onward, I encourage you to see the planet as a gift bearing many healing resources that benefit all living things. Learn more about my company's nature-derived services at http://www.wholecreations.com/themodalities.html.

Did You Just Slap Your Baby In the Face?

Walked out of my home and looked up the block just in time to see a mother slap her 1 year old in the face. Took my shades off and thought "did I really just see that?" I started to walk towards them and thought "I must say something, I know she may curse or do something else, but , f*&k it!!!"

I'm further assessing the situation as I get closer to them. The one-year old was unmoved when she got hit, which leads me to think that this has happened before. The mother appeared angry, frustrated and used her daughter as an outlet.

I knew I wanted to say something, enough to get her attention and possibly out some of her fire, but nothing aggressive. I said, "Did you just slap your baby in the face?" She turned her eyes from me and nervously tended to another baby in the back stroller. I knew that presenting the question to her would let her know that the behavior/abuse is exposed. Yes, it happened outside, but , it's a different perception when you know someone have witnessed you commit the crime.

I'm sure we all masterminded the whole experience, which prompts me to believe that she wanted to bring this darkness to light.

Not sure what their reality will be after I've walked away. Let's hope/project for the best.

What to Expect from Your Birth Doula

Every woman deserves to have a team of nurturing, knowledgeable and proactive people supporting her as she gives birth; her system of care providers should be in place to handle issues A through Z. Birth Doula or Birth Assistant is one such team member that is becoming a commonplace during labor and delivery. S(he) is there to provide emotional and informational support for mother, baby and father, as well as, act as a liaison between parent(s) and midwife or doctor.

A desire for natural, safe and non-invasive birthing is on the rise as mothers want to forgo the possible negative side effects of conventional medication and fully feel and embrace their bodies and babies. With this intention of holistic birthing, your Doula should be equipped with natural therapy knowledge and training to participate in fulfilling your wishes.

Your Doula should be able to administer a multitude of natural therapy services, such as Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Massage, Flower Essences, Homeopathy, Crystal Therapy, Hypnosis, Herbal Care and Energywork; all are non-invasive, holistic approaches that are gentle and effective without any harm to mother and baby. The natural therapy approach is designed to safely assist pain management, emotional upsets, breech support, delayed labor and birth, c-section support, maintaining/increasing breast milk flow and much more.

When researching the service of a Birth Doula, ask about other credentials that will support your best childbirth experience.
